Abstract: This GIS grid atlas contains precipitation frequency estimates for Southeastern states based on precipitation data collected between 1840-2013. This atlas supersedes information in Technical Memorandum NWS Hydro 35, published in 1977, Technical Paper 40, published in 1961, and Technical Paper 49,published in 1964. The grids provide information for durations from 5 minutes through 60 days, and for return periods of 1 year through 1000 years.
Purpose: Precipitation frequency (PF) estimates are used as basic design criteria for a wide variety of hydraulic structures such as culverts, roadway drainages, bridges and small dams. This dataset is for the display and/or analyses of spatially distributed point PF estimates.

Attribute Accuracy Report: All attributes created were tested for internal consistency. In addition, thorough comparisons were conducted with TP40 and TM Hydro35.
Logical Consistency Report: All data were based on precipitation-reporting stations that had at least 20 years of hourly, and/or 30 years of daily precipitation data between 1840 and 2013. Similar quality assurance procedures were used with all input data sets.
Completeness Report: Observed point precipitation values originated from a variety of sources. All station data were subjected to quality control checks by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and/or the National Weather Service.

Process Step:
Process Description: This spatial dataset was prepared by spatially interpolating point precipitation frequency estimates. Precipitation magnitude-frequency relationships at individual stations were computed using a regional frequency analysis approach based on L-moment statistics. Frequency analyses were carried out on annual maximum series (AMS) for a range of durations between 15 minutes and 60 days. Frequency estimates based on partial duration series (PDS) were developed from AMS data using a formula that allows for conversion between AMS and PDS frequencies. Precipitation frequency estimates at sub-hourly durations were derived from corresponding hourly estimates using scaling factors. To assess the uncertainty in estimates, 90% confidence intervals were constructed on AMS and PDS frequency curves. The spatial interpolation approach utilizes the inherently strong linear relationship that exists between mean annual maxima and precipitation frequency estimates for the 2-year average recurrence interval (ARI), as well as between precipitation frequency estimates for consecutive ARIs. Mean annual maximum (MAM) grids for each duration that served as the basis for deriving gridded precipitation frequency estimates at different frequencies were interpolated at 30 arc-seconds resolution using a hybrid statistical-geographic approach for mapping climate data named Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) developed by Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group.
