(function): information
Description:
Abstract: The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) monitors and predicts the leading patterns of climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. These patterns and indices, are monitored on both a monthly and daily basis. Daily forecasts of the AAO, AO, NAO, and PNA patterns are made and verification statistics are compiled.
Purpose: There is a strong interest in knowing which dominant climate patterns contribute to large-scale circulation anomalies at any given time. This information is critical for short-term predictions (1-2 weeks), daily predictions, and dynamical model skill assessments. It is also critical for climate monitoring and assessment.

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview: The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) monitors and predicts the leading patterns of climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. These patterns and indices, are monitored on both a monthly and daily basis. Daily forecasts of the AAO, AO, NAO, and PNA patterns are made and verification statistics are compiled. Daily and monthly teleconnection indices are archived dating 1 January 1950 to present.Analyses are provided showing the impacts of the leading teleconnection patterns on the atmospheric circulation, temperature and precipitation during the four main seasons, and a discussion of each pattern is provided.A detailed discussion is provided on how the teleconnection patterns and indices are computed.
