Description:
Abstract: As of 2012, a new gridded, daily 30 year precipitation estimation dataset centered over Africa at 0.1° spatial resolution has been developed. The Africa Rainfall Climatology version 2 (ARC2) is a revision of the first version of the ARC and is consistent with the operational Rainfall Estimation, version 2, algorithm (RFE2). ARC2 uses inputs from two sources: 1) 3-hourly geostationary infrared (IR) data centered over Africa from the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and 2) quality controlled Global Telecommunication System (GTS) gauge observations reporting 24-hour rainfall accumulations over Africa. The main difference between with ARC2 resides in the recalibration of all Meteosat First Generation (MFG) IR data (1983-2005). Validation and inter-comparison results show that ARC2 is a major improvement over ARC1, and is consistent with other long-term historical datasets such as Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) and Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP).
Purpose: By using a subset of the RFE inputs (i.e. IR and GTS) this enables a long-term satellite precipitation record (1983-present). One day estimates of accumulated precipitation for the African continent are prepared operationally at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as a part of the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET). These estimates are archived and disseminated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from the Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center to assist in drought and flood monitoring efforts for the African continent.

Attribute Accuracy Report: Quality of the rainfall estimation analysis relies heavily on the density and availability of reporting gauge network. Satellite rainfall dataset inter-comparison and validation assessments with independent gauge data show that ARC2 has a slight dry bias over parts of Africa during the northern hemisphere summer. Process Description: Input data used for operational rainfall estimates are from 2 sources: 1) Daily GTS rain gauge data and 2) GPI cloud-top temperature precipitation estimates on a three-hour basis. GPI rainfall estimates are merged with the station data to yield final African rainfall. Data resolution and specifications of the ARC are identical to that of the RFE. Daily binary and graphical output files are produced at approximately 12-Noon EST. Entity and Attribute Overview: Raster data (Geotiff), each pixel is a 24-hour precipitation estimate in (mm) from 06Z-06Z. The shape file in the present case is a polygon and represents the amount of precipitation with its units in millimeters on this polygon (contour). The number of polygons and the number of vertices of each polygon vary depending on the nature of the data and its resolution. Each polygon (contour) has a value associated with it, which is the precipitation amount in millimeters. For interpretation purpose, the amount of precipitation inside the polygon (contour) is greater than the value (precipitation amount) associated with the polygon while outside the polygon it is less than the value (amount of precipitation) associated with the polygon.
