Abstract: This GIS grid atlas contains precipitation frequency estimates for Alaska based on precipitation data collected between 1886-2011. This atlas is an updated version of Technical Paper 47, published in 1963, and Technical Paper 52, published in 1965. The grids provide information for durations from 5 minutes through 60 days, and for return periods of 1 year through 1000 years.
Purpose: Precipitation frequency (PF) estimates are used as basic design criteria for a wide variety of hydraulic structures such as culverts, roadway drainages, bridges and small dams. This dataset is for the display and/or analyses of spatially distributed point PF estimates.

Attribute Accuracy Report: All attributes created were tested for internal consistency. In addition, thorough comparisons were conducted with TP47.
Logical Consistency Report: All data were based on precipitation-reporting stations that had at least 9 years of hourly, and/or 10 years of daily precipitation data between 1886 and 2011. Similar quality assurance procedures were used with all input data sets.

Process Step:
Process Description: This spatial dataset was prepared by spatially interpolating point precipitation frequency estimates. The precipitation frequency estimates were calculated using regional L-moment statistics based on annual maximum series data. The spatial interpolation of point precipitation frequency estimates was accomplished with PRISM coupled with a derivation process based on previous Volumes' cascade, residual add-back (CRAB) procedure. Mean annual maximum grids were created using PRISM, Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model, at Oregon State University. PRISM is an analytical tool that uses point data, a digital elevation model, and other spatial data sets to generate gridded estimates of climatic parameters. PRISM is uniquely designed and constantly updated to map climate in the most difficult situations, including high mountains, rain shadows, temperature inversions, coastal regions, and other complex climatic regimes. Meanwhile, the approach to actually derive the precipitation frequency grids is a derivation process that utilizes the strong, linear relationship between a particular duration and frequency (e.g. 50-year 24-hour) and the next higher frequency (e.g. 100-year 24-hour). For each duration, the cascade began with the PRISM-derived mean annual maximum (MAM) grid as the initial predictor grid and the 2-year precipitation frequency estimates as the subsequent grid. Ratios between the 2-year estimates and corresponding MAM estimates for each station were spatially interpolated to a grid by applying an inverse-distance-weighting algorithm that uses the nine closest stations not more than 600 miles apart. Gridded MAM estimates were then multiplied by corresponding gridded ratios to create a grid of 2-year precipitation frequency estimates. In the subsequent run, ratios between the 5-year and 2-year estimates were interpolated and used to calculate 5-year precipitation grid from the 2-year grid, and so forth. 2-year precipitation frequency estimates were also used to create a grid of 1-year estimates. Precipitation frequency grids for sub-hourly durations were derived by multiplying the 60-minute precipitation frequency grids by corresponding scaling factors.
