Description:
Abstract: It is shown that radiance observations centered at four additional levels in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere can be synthesized utilizing the measured limb-brightening of the radiance observations of the Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU). These additional radiance measurements double the vertical range of explicit radiance observations from the SSU. As a series of Stratospheric Sounding Units have been flown on the TIROS-N series of NOAA satellites, observations of zonal mean radiance, with higher vertical resolution than has generally been obtainable with ndir-viewing satellite, are available since 1979 from the lower stratosphere to the lower mesosphere. This dataset is SSU monthly zonal mean temperature anomaly from 70S to 70N at every 10 degree interval. The data cover a 27 years period from Jan. 1979 to Dec. 2005.
Purpose: The SSU based monthly zonal mean temperature anomaly is constructed for applications in climate monitoring, climate analysis and suitable for long term trend estimates.

The follow effects have been removed/corrected, diurnal, semi-diurnal, SSU cell pressure and atmosphere CO2 concentration variations. The processing methodology is described in Nash, J.
