Description:
Abstract: Monthly global soil moisture, runoff, and evaporation data sets produced by the Leaky Bucket model at 0.5° × 0.5° resolution for the period from 1948 to the present. The land model is a one?layer “bucket” water balance model, while the driving input fields are Climate Prediction Center monthly global precipitation over land, which uses over 17,000 gauges worldwide, and monthly global temperature from GHCN-CAMS (Fan and Van den Dool 2008). The output consists of global monthly soil moisture, evaporation, and runoff, starting from January 1948. A distinguishing feature of this data set is that all fields are updated monthly, which greatly enhances utility for near real time purposes. Data validation shows that the land model does well; both the simulated annual cycle and interannual variability of soil moisture are reasonably good against the limited observations in different regions. Refer to these papers: Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2004), Climate Prediction Center global monthly soil moisture data set at 0.5° resolution for 1948 to present, J. Geophys. Res., 109, D10102, doi:10.1029/2003JD004345. Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2008), A global monthly land surface air temperature analysis for 1948–present, J. Geophys. Res., 113, D01103, doi:10.1029/2007JD008470.
Purpose: The global soil moisture, runoff, and evaporation analyses are constructed for applications in climate prediction, climate monitoring, climate analysis and verifications of numerical models and satellite estimates.
Supplemental Information: Data is available at the online linkage location in labeled subdirectories for GeoTIFF and gridded binary formats. In the “GeoTIFF” subdirectory, climatologies based on a 1979-2007 base period are available in the subdirectory “clim”. Full field monthly values for soil moisture (w), runoff (r), and evaporation (e) are available for 1948-present in the subdirectory “monthly”. In the “gridded_binary” subdirectory, w.long is the full soil moisture values, r.long is runoff, and e.long is evaporation. See the README.txt file in this subdirectory for sample scripts to open this data using FORTRAN, IDL, and GrADS. Files are updated monthly, starting January 1948.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Value Accuracy Information:
Attribute Accuracy Report: Quality of the analysis relies heavily on the density of reporting gauge network, with the analysis over gauge dense regions (e.g. CONUS, Europe) exhibiting good quantitative accuracy while that over equatorial Africa undesirable. For quality details refer to Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2004), Climate Prediction Center global monthly soil moisture data set at 0.5° resolution for 1948 to present, J. Geophys. Res. , 109 , D10102, doi:10.1029/2003JD004345.
Logical Consistency Report: Yes.
Completeness Report: Quality control has been performed for the input reports. The process has been examined through a comprehensive set of test procedures on its performance in reproducing quantitative precipitation & temperature. The soil moisture has been tested and compared to observations and other models. The observed annual cycle and seasonal to interannual variability of soil moisture are simulated fairly well. See Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2004), Climate Prediction Center global monthly soil moisture data set at 0.5° resolution for 1948 to present, J. Geophys. Res., 109 , D10102, doi:10.1029/2003JD004345 for more details.
Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description: First, the GHCN+CAMS global monthly temperature is constructed. Second, a global monthly precipitation analysis from the CPC is procured. Third, the Leaky Bucket soil model is integrated from 1948 to present with the above temperature and precipitation inputs. This model outputs soil moisture, runoff and evaporation. Refer to these papers: Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2004), Climate Prediction Center global monthly soil moisture data set at 0.5° resolution for 1948 to present, J. Geophys. Res., 109, D10102, doi:10.1029/2003JD004345. Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2008), A global monthly land surface air temperature analysis for 1948–present, J. Geophys.
