Description:
Abstract: The Global Forecast System (GFS) forecast 0-10cm soil-moisture data at 37.5km resolution is created at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center for the purpose of near real-time usage by the national and international relief agencies and the general public. The users of this data include the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF) and the national Meteorological Centers in Africa, Asia and South America. The data is disseminated in the binary format as well as in the form of shape and tiff files for use by the GIS community. The soil moisture data in the GIS format can be accessed at the online linkage provided above.
Purpose: To create and disseminate the real-time, high-resolution 0-10cm (top layer) soil moisture forecasts from the NCEP GFS model which will be very useful for the decision makers of the national and the international agencies including the above mentioned agencies, as well as the general public.
Supplemental Information: This document describes the metadata for the seven individual 24-hour averaged underground volumetric soil-moisture amounts (expressed as the fractional percentage volume) corresponding to the seven forecast days (labeled as 24hr, 48hr, 72hr, 96hr, 120hr, 144hr, 168hr forecasts)and one for the 7-day average of the soil-moisture. Thus, the represented forecast fields have 8 tiff files and 8 shape files. All these files along with the supplementary files are zipped into a single file (per day). However, owing to the disk space limitations, only a short-term (latest 30-day period) archive is maintained. As for the spatial resolution, there are 960 points in the longitudinal direction and 481 points in the latitudinal direction. The points in both the longitudinal direction and the latitudinal direction are spaced 0.375 decimal degrees apart.

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview: The shape file in the present case is a polygon and represents the amount of moisture with its units in percentage proportion on this polygon (contour). The number polygons and the number of vertices of each polygon vary depending on the nature of the data and its resolution. Each polygon (contour) has a value associated with it, which is the amount of moisture in percentage proportion. For interpretation purpose, the amount of proportional moisture inside the polygon (contour) is greater than the value (percentage proportion) associated with the polygon while outside the polygon it is less than the value (percentage proportion) associated with the polygon. Each pixel in Raster data (GeoTIFF) is the fractional percentage amount of soil moisture in 0-10 cm depth.
