Zoom In - Zooms in to a smaller geographic area, showing more map detail. Zoom in on the map by either drawing a rectangle or clicking a point.
- Draw a Rectangle: Click the Zoom In tool. Left-click a point on the map and, while holding the mouse down, drag a rectangle on the map.
- Results: The map will redraw, zoomed in on the area drawn by the rectangle.
- Click on a Point: Click the Zoom In tool, then left-click a point on the map.
- Results: The map will redraw, zoomed in to an area centered on the selected point.

Zoom Out - Zooms out to a larger geographic area, showing less map detail. Zoom out on the map by either drawing a rectangle or clicking a point.
- Draw a Rectangle: Click the Zoom Out tool. Left-click a point on the map and, while holding the mouse down, drag a rectangle on the map.
- Results: The map will redraw, zoomed out to a view centered on the rectangle. A smaller rectangle will zoom out to a larger map view while a larger rectangle will zoom out to a smaller map view.
- Click on a Point: Click the Zoom Out tool, then left-click on a point on the map.
- Results: The map will redraw, zoomed out to a view centered on the selected point.

- To Use: Click the Zoom to World tool once.
- Results: The map will redraw, displaying the entire world.

Zoom to Last Map - Zooms to the last map view.
- To Use: Click the Zoom to Last Map tool once.
- Results: The map will redraw displaying the previous view.

Locator Map - Shows or hides the locator map.
- To Use: Click the Locator Map tool once.
- Results: The locator map will be either shown in the top left-hand corner of the large map or hidden.

Shift Map - Shifts or moves the map view without changing the scale.
- To Use: Click the Shift Map tool. Left-click and hold on the map. Drag the map in the desired direction and release.
- Results: The map is redrawn, centered on the location the map was dragged to.

Identify Location - Displays information about a location on the map.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Identify Location tool, then click on a location on the map.
- Results: The selected location's attribute records will display below the map.

Extract Data - Allows visible data types in the area of interest to be extracted and downloaded as shapefiles.
- To Use: Zoom to the area of interest and click the Extract Data tool. The visible data types to be extracted are listed below the map. Click the Extract button displayed below the map.
- Results: A link to download the zipped up shapefiles will appear below the map. Click on the link to download the zip file to your desktop. Note that only visible, non-imagery data types in your area of interest will be downloaded. If there is a selection within the active data type, only the selected locations will be included in the shapefile.

External Window - Allows attribute data to be displayed either below the map (default) or in a new window.
- To Use: Click the External Window tool once.
- Results: Results will be either shown below the map or in a new window.

Select Box - Selects map locations by drawing a box.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Select Box tool. Left-click a point on the map and, while holding the mouse down, drag a rectangle across the desired area on the map.
- Results: Map locations will be selected and highlighted by the box. Associated attribute records will display below the map.

Select Line/Poly - Selects map locations by drawing a line or a polygon.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Select Line/Poly tool. Left-click a point on the map and wait for the red marker to be displayed on the map. Continue to left-click points until the desired line or polygon is almost formed. Click one of the Complete... buttons below the map to finish your line/polygon and a selection will be made.
- Results: Map locations will be selected and highlighted. Associated attribute records will display below the map.

Zoom to Selected - Zooms the map view to the extent of the selected locations.
- Note: Map locations must be selected for this tool to be enabled.
- To Use: Click the Zoom to Selected tool once.
- Results: The map will redraw, zooming to the view of the selected locations.

Clear Selection - Clears any selected or highlighted locations from the map.
- To Use: Click the Clear Selection tool once.
- Results: The map will redraw and the selected locations will be removed.

Select Radius - Selects locations from the active data type based on a radius distance (in miles) from a center point.
- Note: The map view must be within a specific map scale (less than 1:25,000) for this tool to be enabled.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Select Radius tool. Set the radius distance (in miles). On the map, left-click the center point.
- Results: The map will redraw, displaying the center point and the selection area. Locations from the active data type that fall within the selection area are highlighted and their attribute data is shown below the map.

Buffer Location - Buffers selected locations by a defined radius (in miles). If indicated, will select locations from another data type that fall within the buffer area.
- Note: Map locations must be selected for this tool to be used.
- To Use: With locations selected, click the Buffer Location tool. If desired, select a target data type to highlight locations from. Enter the buffer radius distance (in miles). If desired, click the checkbox to display attribute data for the highlighted locations. Click the Create Buffer button.
- Results: The map will redraw, displaying the buffered area. If chosen, any locations from the target data type that fall within the buffered area are highlighted and their attribute data is displayed below the map.

Measure - Measures distances between points on the map in miles.
- To Use: Click the Measure tool. Left-click the measure start point and wait for the red marker to be displayed on the map. Repeat until measuring complete.
- Results: The total and each segment distance (in miles) are shown at the top of the map.

Query - Queries the active data type using a constructed query expression.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Query tool. Select a field to query. Select an operator to be used in the expression. Type a value or click the Get Samples button and select a value for the expression. Verify that the query expression is correct, then click the Add to Query String button. Click the Execute button.
- Results: The map will redraw, highlighting the selected locations. Associated attribute records will display below the map.

Search - Searches the active data type for a text string.
- To Use: Set the active data type. Click the Search tool. Type in the case-sensitive string that you want to find. Click the Start Search button.
- Results: The map will redraw, highlighting the selected locations. Associated attribute records will display below the map.

Print Map - Prepares the map view for printing.
- To Use: Click on the Print Map tool. A dialog will display below the map. Enter a map title. Click on "Create Print Page" to open a new browser window displaying the map formatted for printing.
- Results: You may use the browser's File/Print menu to submit the map to the printer.

1. How do I to turn data types on and off?
- Click the check box to the left of each data type name to turn it on or off.
- A data type must be checked to be displayed on the map.
- If Auto Refresh is on, the map will automatically redraw, otherwise click the Refresh Map button to redraw the map with the checked data types showing.

2. What is Auto Refresh?
- When turned on, Auto Refresh will automatically redraw the map when any data type is made visible or hidden.
- Auto Refresh is turned off by default.

3. How do I make a data type active?
- Click on the circle to the left of the data type name to make it active.
- The active data type is the one from which you are able to select locations and view its attribute information.
- The name of the active data type is displayed at the bottom left of the page.

4. How do I know what the current map scale is?
- The current map scale changes with every zoom in/zoom out.
- It is displayed at the bottom right of the page as a ratio (e.g. 1:24,000).

5. What is a shapefile?
- It is actually a set of files that contain points, lines, or polygons that hold tabular data and a spatial location.
- At the very minimum, a shapefile consists of 3 files: .shp, .shx, and .dbf (e.g. countries.shp, countries.shx, and countries.dbf).
- This file format is used in ESRI's® ArcView software.
